How to make lantern out of old jars

Step 1. Wash and dry
Wash glass jars in hot, soapy water and let them air dry.
Step 2. Make templates
Cut templates out of poster board in decorative shapes such as stars, half-moons, or hearts. Or buy ready-made templates from craft stores.
Step 3. Cut out shapes
Use the templates to outline the shapes on the nonsticky side of removable adhesive paper, and then cut them out.
Step 4. Decorate the jars
Stick your designs onto the outside of the jars.
Step 5. Spray them
Coat the outside of the jars evenly with glass-frosting spray. Let them dry completely. Then, remove the adhesive-paper designs.
Step 6. Add candles
Put a votive candle or tea light inside each jar.
Nestle the candle in sand or sea salt to keep it stationary.
Step 7. Measure wire for handle
To make hanging lanterns, take a piece of strong wire and measure how much you need for a handle by wrapping the wire around the mouth of the jar, looping it over the top of the jar, and bringing it back down to the mouth of the jar. Clip with wire cutters. Create a small, open-ended loop on each end of the wire with pliers.
Wire hangers work just fine.
Step 8. Make the handle
Wrap one end of the wire around the jar’s mouth, securing it by slipping the loop around the wire and tightening it with pliers. Take the free end of wire, and bend it into an inverted U to make a handle. Secure the end by wrapping the other loop around the wire at the jar opening.
Step 9. Enjoy!
Enjoy the beautiful outdoor lighting your homemade lanterns provide.

A Christmas Lantern
Decoration to Make

You can make these delightful Christmas Lantern decorations quickly and easily yourself or with the children. You could make them in any type of paper and decorate them as festively as you like! They would also make a great summer decoration for a garden party made in bright colours and strung in tree branches, across a patio or around a deck. They could also be a spooky Halloween decoration made from black paper.
Lantern
You can make two lanterns out of one A4-sized sheet of paper. You could use coloured paper, but it is much more fun to take white paper and decorate your own. If you use paints you can splodge the paint over the paper, the more abstract the better it looks! You could also colour in crayons, pencils or felt tip pens. Cover the whole of each sheet of paper that you wish to use.
Next cut the paper in half lengthways and cut a strip off the end and put it aside to make the handle. Fold in half again lengthways and make evenly spaced cuts in the paper along the folded edge to about 1cm or ½” form the edge, then unfold the paper.
Diagram
If you want to decorate your lanterns with glitter, sequins or shiny stickers this would be the time to go for it!
Finally roll it into a cylinder. You can staple, glue or sticky tape it in place, and finally attach the handle to either side. The finished lanterns could be hung on a Christmas tree separately or stapled to a string to form a garland.
These are quick to make, fun and the children can be involved at whatever level is suited to their ability, whether they are just able to scribble with a crayon or are old enough to use the scissors safely.

Illustrated Craft Tutorial - Christmas Lantern Tutorial
This project is recommended for ages 12 and up.

Christmas Lantern Tutorial 1
1. Cut four cardstock squares to the size of 12 x 12 cm and 1 cardstock square to the size of 13x13 cm (this is the bottom).
Christmas Lantern Tutorial 2 2. On the bottom piece, score an 1 cm line on all sides and fold these sides up.
Christmas Lantern Tutorial 3 3. On each of the other pieces, score 1 cm of one side and fold this side up.
Christmas Lantern Tutorial 4 4. Afterwards, take your tree template and trace and cut a tree on each of the 4 side pieces.
Christmas Lantern Tutorial 6 5. Now you need to cut 4 sqares smaller than the 4 side squares out of the vellum paper and glue these to the inside (with the 1 cm side piece up).
Christmas Lantern Tutorial 7 6. Take the bottom piece and place a line of glue on the flap of one side. Stick now this piece to one of side pieces. Make sure that the flap sections are always on the inside.
Christmas Lantern Tutorial 8 7.This is how it looks once the first wall has been added.
Christmas Lantern Tutorial 9 8. Now add the next side piece. Since it will now be joining at 2 points, you will need to place glue on the bottom flap as well as a side flap. Use paper clips at any point to hold pieces together if they do not stay.
Christmas Lantern Tutorial 10 9. This is how it looks on the bottom inside of the box. You see that all of the flaps are visible on the inside. Continue adding the side walls until the lantern is complete.
Christmas Lantern Tutorial 12 10. Cut four 3 x 12 cm pieces and score a line down the center lengthwise of each piece.
Christmas Lantern Tutorial 13 11. Now add the next side piece. Glue these strips now over the 4 corners of the lantern. Punch a hole at the top of each side (a total of 8 holes).

Christmas Lantern Tutorial 14
12. Use an eyelet to decorate each hole. Take some gold wire (about 20 cm length) and wrap it tightly around a pencil or another object to form a spiral. Connect each of the 2 ends in 2 holes diagonal from each other of the lantern. This looks decorative and the lantern can be hung as well

Procedure in Making Christmas Lantern:
  • Cut the wallpaper scrap in the shape of a rectangle. The recommended size of the rectangular paper is 8X 11.5
  • Cut off a strip about half inch from the shorter edge of the paper to make a handle for the cylinder lantern. Keep the piece of paper for later use.
  • In order to make the body of the cylinder lantern, fold the paper in half lengthways. While you are folding, make sure that the patterned side of the paper is on the outside.
  • Make vertical cuts from the folded edge, cutting towards the unfolded edge of the paper. Stop cutting when you reach the non-folded end of the paper. Ensure that the vertical cuts are half an inch apart from each other.
  • Unfold the paper and bring the corners of the paper together width-ways in order to form a cylinder crease-side out.
  • Glue or tape or staple the edges of the paper together.
  • Affix the handle to the top and hang your paper lantern.
  • To beautify the paper lantern, glue some pictures or color the lantern using crayons or color pencils.

Traditional and decorative lanterns

Paper lanterns over plaza for the Feria de Abril festival, in Seville, Andalusia, Spain

Decorative lanterns exist in a wide range of designs. Some hang from buildings, while others are placed on or just above the ground. Paper lanterns occur in societies around the world. Modern varieties often place an electric light in a decorative glass case.

Chinese lanterns in the night sky of Lijiang, Yunnan
The ancient Chinese sometimes captured fireflies in transparent or semi-transparent containers and used them as (short-term) lanterns. Raise the Red Lantern, a Chinese film, prominently features lanterns as a motif. Lanterns are used in many Chinese festivals. During the Ghost Festival, lotus shaped lanterns are set afloat in rivers and seas to symbolic guide the lost souls of forgotten ancestors to the afterlife. During the Lantern Festival, the displaying of many lanterns is still a common sight on the 15th day of the first lunar month throughout China. In Chinese festivities, the kongming lanterns can be seen floating high into the sky during festivities.
Use of fireflies in transparent containers was also a widespread practice in ancient India. But since these were short term solutions, the use of fire torches was more prevalent.[citation needed]
In the Eastern Orthodox Church lanterns are used in religious processions and liturgical entrances, usually coming before the processional cross.
Lanterns are also used to transport the Holy Fire from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Great Saturday during Holy Week

What is Lantern?

A lantern is a portable lighting device or mounted light fixture used to illuminate broad areas. Lanterns may also be used for signaling, as 'torches', or as general light sources outdoors (such as camping). Low light level varieties are used for decoration. The term "lantern" is also used more generically to mean a 'light source' or the enclosure for a light source. Examples are glass pane enclosed street lights, or the housing for the top lamp and lens section of a lighthouse.
